As we watch the see-saw battle reported between Russian and Ukrainian troops we need to keep our eye on the big picture.
The fall or defence of Bakhmut, an area fought over for months now, may be hardly consequential other than the fact, the assault on Ukrainian defensive positions is relentless, is costing Russia thousands of soldiers, and is being led by Wagner Mercenary Group which is a rising force in Russia.
Bakhmut is not a strategic target, and if it slips into Russian hands, it is not a turning point in the war.
What is significant this week is the notion China could start supplying lethal weapons, like Iran has done, to Russia.
That could turn the tide in Ukraine, and will infuriate the West, especially America which is warning China it could face sanctions.
Sanctions against China could start a trade war like no other, and rattle the World economy.
Is this a great struggle emerging between Democracies and Autocracies? Because if so, the war will expend far beyond the borders of Ukraine.
On Back Story this week I interview Tufts University expert Michael Beckley who predicts China is likely to wade into the conflict in Ukraine and supply lethal weapons.
There is a great information war which accompanies the ground war between Ukraine and China. But one that Russia can’t win says our other guest Kyiv Post reporter Jason Smart.
